A year after the Ozzfest both Logan and Whit found themselves without a band, Logan had left Soulfly, and Life Of Agony had decided to enter the studio without Whit. Whit decided to call up Logan and the conversation as he recalls went a little like this:
Whit: "Dude, what's the deal?"
Logan: "It looks like we're in a band."
The following quote taken from Logan gives us some idea of their freindship and how it started:
"I wasn't suicidal" Logan explains "Being on stage was the best high in the world, but when the shows over that feeling goes away. I'm not a very moderate person and I used to look for something to replace and replenish that. I had to check myself and ask if I even wanted to be here, because apart from the support of Whit, I was all alone"
Blunt joined the mix soon after, he had met Logan while supporting Soulfly in his old band 'Dayinthelife', Logan and Blunt would meet after shows and put together bits and pieces of music with the intent of creating a side project. The original Idea was to use a different vocalist for each track they wrote. The following quote was from Loganm about the period after leaving Soulfly:
"Three years ago I was out of Soulfly and that was a rough time in my life. All of a sudden the whirlwind of endless parties and touring came to a screeching halt. Suddenly I was doing nothing; I had no money in my pocket and I didn't know what the fuck to do - all I knew at that point was I nearly died a couple of times through being self destructive"
The band then moved into a house together for the next 18 months to work on the music and define their style and what Medication was to be. The following quote gives us and idea what life in this house was like and their process of creating the music:
"Logan goes to sleep at night, gets up in the morning and does his gym shit while me and Blunt are full nocturnal freaks. Bottom line: Blunt and me would sit up, smoke cigarettes and write riffs and melodies. Sometimes we'd have full songs done as far as acoustic and vocal and lyric and everything. We'd wait up so Logan could program the studio shit with drums and all that. He got up, threw it down and it was done. 'Something New' in particular was like that, just flat out done." - Whit
After that, Logan and Blunt moved in Guillermo's house, where they rent some rooms from him (that's one of the places where PV was recorded). Below are some pics of Blunt and Logan at Guillermo's house, Guillermo (aka DJ Vivas) is a well known LA turntablist.
Robert Trujillo helped the band out during these early days offering his opinions, lending equipment and playing on demos.
When the band recruited Roy Mayorga (ex Soulfly) on drums they felt it was time to play their first gig, the place was The Gig on Melrose and their name was Pale Demons. It wasn't long after their first gig that they began to play the whole of the Hollywood circuit.
After the bands first show they settled on the name Medication, this is the reason given for the choice of name:
"Whit's ex-girlfriend was taking some pills and he looked over and said What's that, I want some. It was some kind of birth control or something. And she was like no you don't want that it's just my medication. Then we thought hey that's kinda rad. We were going crazy looking for a name. It took like 6-7 months. Then also looking at the name. Music itself is a medication. It is healing. It is a form of escapism." - Logan
The next step was for Medication to find a bass player, and when you’re used to playing with the likes of Robert Trujillo those are some pretty big shoes to fill. At the same time Medication were looking for a bass player Kyle Sanders was looking for a band and it when Whit and Kyle both turned to Dan Richardson from Pro-pain and LOA for help that there paths crossed. This is a quote from Kyle about joining Medication and taken from there official website:
"I was living in Atlanta and getting extremely frustrated with the scene so I called Dan and asked him to keep his ears open for me. Within days, Whit called him with the same scenario, saying the band can't find a bass player. It was as frustrating for them not to have a bass player as it was for me not to have a band. One phone call was made, I was on a plane out to L.A. to see what was happening and it was on immediately."
Now that the band were complete they hit the studio for the first time and recorded their debut 5 song EP. It was different to what a lot of people expected, it was extremely moody and dark in stark contrast to the popular nu metal sound of the time.
Once the EP was recorded, but before it was for sale, the band went off to tour the UK for 14 dates, reviews of these shows were very positive and at this stage the band had become extremely tight and really found there sound.
In 2002 Locomotive Music, the international rock label and distributor based in Spain, chose Medication to be their first U.S. signing. The band went into the studio with producer Bill Kennedy (Nine Inch Nails, Jackoff Jill, Monster Magnet, Sepultura, Alice in Chains) who had mixed their EP, and recorded Prince Valium.
Both the Prince Valium and the EP had enjoyed moderate sucess, more so in Europe than the US. Locomotive music has seen something of a barrage of criticism over the way they've handled Medication. The feeling amoung many of Medications fans is that Locomotive just havn't put enough money into the band in terms of promotion and getting their music into the public domain.
It has been rumoured that Medication were given a budget of one million dollars, other figures have flown around but one million is often mentioned. It's hard for many of the fans to believe that such a large budget existed considering the lack of focused promotion the band have received so far, for example Medication have only had three main features in reputable rock mags in the UK since their Locomotive signing.
In January 2003, the band cancelled a 38 date European tour which had already been pulled back. Kyle broke the news to fans through the official message board which then led to major concerns and the spread of rumours about the bands current status and wether they were still together.
Kyle was quick to respond and let the fans know exactly what he knew, that things were on hold, atleast for the moment. The band hadn't split, Logan, Blunt and Kyle had begun work on side projects, because like everyone they need time to recharge and take a break from time to time.
On Febuary the 5th a message from Blunt was posted on the offical forum letting the fans know the bands current status and how he was feeling:
Hello everyone,
I feel i should say something about what is going on. i must say i am heart broken about the fact we are not doing our European tour! i live to play music. all i want to do is make really good records that people enjoy and to play kick ass live shows!!!!
I have just played my last show with mimic on Saturday night in NC. so for me...... my days of playing shows are over for a long time it seems. i thank the mimic girls for letting me play with them! it has been nothing but fun!
As far as side projects go the are none i can speak of, i have spent most of this time of writing new medication stuff, that is my priority !! so if anyone thinks the tour did not happen because i have other things going on that is not true!
Medication has been a band for 4 years and we have tried our best throughout that time. i am truly sad about this whole thing. i apologize to anyone who was looking forward to seeing us...... sorry to let you down! i am just as let down as you are!
I don't know what the future will bring but i have more songs than i know what to do with. i will keep everyone posted one what our next move will be! thanx for all of your patience who knows what 2003 will bring medication? i can only hope something good!

Then the bad news came, on Febuary 19th 2003 Medication released the following press statement:
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
LA ROCK BAND MEDICATION PARTS WAYS WITH LABEL AND DISBANDS
Los Angeles, CA (February 19, 2003) -- MEDICATION has officially parted ways with label, LOCOMOTIVE RECORDS.
Along with this label separation, MEDICATION has collectively agreed to dissolve the band. While they believed in this project since its inception, this amicable decision to disband was one that was carefully considered. After four years, the band felt they gave MEDICATION their all and decided it was in their best interest to move on and pursue other projects.
LOGAN MADER (guitar/vocals), continues to produce/engineer other bands and is working on a project with BLUNT (guitar). WHIT CRANE (vocals) is involved in a project in San Francisco that is not yet announced. KYLE SANDERS (bass) and CHRIS HAMILTON (drums) continue to work on their VOD project.
Along with the above, MEDICATION will no longer have an official website or message board. The band's former official website, MedicationMusic.com, is now closed.
MEDICATION extends thanks to all the fans, press and radio that supported their music.
This was sad news for many fans, the status of the band around this time was dubious, but, with only a few weeks ago a full scale euro tour on the tables there were alot of hopes raised, only tobe dashed.
Fans began to ask why this had happened, the press release seemed to vaigue, a few paragraphs for four years just wasn't enough. It was only 2 weeks previous we heard from Blunt saying that he had written some music for the next album and its also a fact that Medication still had one album left to release under their contract with Locomotive.
This bio wouldn't be complete without, atleast, a mention of the drummers that were a part of the band, all of them great in their own ways. First we had Roy Mayorga who played with the band up until Febuary 2002 when he left to re-join Soulfly. After Roy left the band auditioned a number of drmmers including Aaron “Fat Beat” Rossi who was actually rumoured to join the band but never actually did. In March of 2002 news was released that Josh Freese was to play drums on Prince Valium and it was to be Shannon Larkin who was to play drums for Medication on a number of upcomming live dates. After Shannon Jason Loree took over as a live drummer in May 2002. Chris Hamilton drummer joined the band in September 2002 and would have been the bands drummer for the european tour which ended up being cancelled.
Since the split the news of the band members side projects began to appear. Things were looking very good for Kyle, he has been working with his new band bloodsimple featuring ex members of VOD.
Soon after the split I was in pretty close contact with blunt and we exchanged alot of emails. He had started working with Logan on a project called Idol-X and they had met with atleast one record label to discuss to a deal. Both Logan and Blunt seemed commited to this project, which featured Logan on vocals. But then news on Idol-X went quite. Blunt was mooving house around this time and wasn't online much. By the next time I had spoken to him Idol-X seemed tobe on hold. Logan had began working on a new band named 'New Black' and Blunt had a new band in the works. Blunt's new peoject doesn't yet have a name.
Then some time around august 2003 we finally got some news on Whit's new band, no name as of yet, but the following quote is the article which appeard on blabbermouth.net was the signal to let us know that things were infact happening:
Vocalist Whitfield Crane (UGLY KID JOE, LIFE OF AGONY, MEDICATION) has started a new group with former FAITH NO MORE members Billy Gould (bass) and John Hudson (guitar). The as-yet-unnamed San Francisco-based project, which is also said to include Craig McFarland from the acclaimed Bay Area band M.I.R.V., are currently seeking a drummer and are writing material for their debut album, tentatively due in 2004. No further information is available at this time.
as the story continues so will this bio, stay tuned...
